Cricket

Outside of astronomy, my main interest is playing and watching cricket, following the fortunes of Yorkshire CCC and England. I currently play for Berlin Cricket Club where I have been 2nd XI vice captain (2016-2019) and club treasurer (2017-2021). Cricket in Berlin can be a somewhat frustrating experience, but this is made up for by (1) my amazing (and amazingly diverse!) set of team mates, and (2) occasionally picking up a wicket or two (caught cow corner is a fairly safe bet!) with my legspin.

I have previously played for Warsaw Cricket Club (2013-2014), Warsaw United Cricket Club (2015), the wonderful Newcastle and Hartshill Cricket Club (2010-2012), and the St Andrews University Staff and Postgraduate Cricket Club (2006-2009), without whom I would surely have gone mad while writing my Ph.D!

U.C. team Quizzes

I enjoy quizzes, and had the honour of captaining St Andrews on the BBC television programme, 'University Challenge'. In our first round match broadcast in October 2008, we beat Exeter College, Oxford 190 - 135.

Our second round match was a 280 - 120 defeat to Lincoln College, Oxford which was broadcast in December 2008. .

Walking
Loch Brandy, Angus
I also enjoy walking, particularly in the hills and mountains of Scotland. The image above is of Loch Brandy, Glen Clova, Angus from January 2008. I combined several photographs together, using the excellent Panorama Factory software.
